Gum Disease Diagnosis
Comprehensive periodontal evaluations using probing measurements, digital X-rays, and clinical assessment.Catching Gum Disease Early
Gum disease is one of the most common chronic health conditions in adults, yet many people do not know they have it until significant damage has already occurred. At New Image Advanced Dental in Trinidad, CO, we use a thorough, multi-step diagnostic approach to detect gum disease at the earliest possible stage. Early detection means simpler treatment, less discomfort, and better long-term outcomes.
Dr. Amy Wilson performs a periodontal evaluation as part of every comprehensive exam, using precise measurements and advanced imaging to assess the health of your gums and supporting bone.
Our Diagnostic Process
Periodontal Probing
Using a small measuring instrument, our team gently checks the depth of the space (pocket) between your gums and each tooth. Healthy pockets are typically 1 to 3 millimeters deep. Deeper pockets indicate gum disease and help us determine its severity.
Digital X-Rays
Digital X-rays reveal bone levels around your teeth that are not visible during a clinical exam. Bone loss is a hallmark of periodontitis and helps Dr. Wilson stage the disease accurately.
Clinical Assessment
Dr. Wilson examines your gums for signs of inflammation, bleeding, recession, and changes in tissue color and texture. She also evaluates tooth mobility, bite alignment, and any other factors that may contribute to or be affected by gum disease.
What Happens After Diagnosis
Once the stage and severity of your gum disease are determined, Dr. Wilson discusses your treatment options in clear, straightforward terms. Treatment may range from improved home care for early gingivitis to scaling and root planing for more advanced cases.
If it has been a while since your last dental visit, or if you are experiencing any signs of gum problems, a periodontal evaluation is the first step. Call 719-846-7387 or request an appointment online. We serve patients from Trinidad, Walsenburg, Raton, and across Southern Colorado.
Frequently Asked Questions About Gum Disease Diagnosis
We use a combination of visual inspection, periodontal probing to measure pocket depths around each tooth, digital X-rays to check for bone loss, and a review of your symptoms and medical history. This comprehensive approach allows us to accurately stage the disease and plan the right treatment.
Gum disease progresses through stages. Gingivitis is the earliest stage, characterized by red, swollen gums that bleed easily. Mild to moderate periodontitis involves deeper pockets and some bone loss. Advanced periodontitis involves significant bone loss and may result in loose or shifting teeth.
Yes. Many patients have gum disease without noticeable symptoms, especially in the early stages. Regular dental exams with periodontal probing allow us to detect the disease before it causes visible damage.
Periodontal screening is part of every routine dental exam at our office. If you have risk factors such as diabetes, smoking, or a family history of gum disease, more frequent evaluations may be recommended.
