Tooth Extractions
Simple and surgical extractions for damaged, decayed, or impacted teeth that cannot be saved with other treatments. When a Tooth Needs to Come Out
Extraction is always a last resort. At New Image Advanced Dental, we do everything we can to save a natural tooth. But when a tooth is too severely damaged, decayed, or infected to be repaired, removing it is sometimes the best way to protect your overall oral health. Dr. Amy Wilson performs both simple and surgical extractions in our Trinidad, CO office with precision and genuine care for your comfort.
Whether you need a single extraction or multiple teeth removed in preparation for dentures or implants, our team will walk you through every step of the process and ensure you understand your options for replacing the tooth afterward.
Types of Extractions
Simple Extractions
A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that is fully visible above the gumline. After numbing the area with local anesthesia, Dr. Wilson loosens the tooth with a specialized instrument and gently removes it. The procedure is quick, and most patients are surprised by how comfortable it is.
Surgical Extractions
A surgical extraction is needed when a tooth is broken below the gumline, impacted (trapped under bone or tissue), or has curved roots that make removal more complex. Dr. Wilson makes a small incision in the gum tissue to access the tooth, and may need to section it into smaller pieces for easier removal.
After Your Extraction
We provide detailed aftercare instructions to promote healing and prevent complications. Key guidelines include biting on gauze to control bleeding, avoiding straws and smoking, eating soft foods, and taking any prescribed or recommended medications. Most patients manage post-extraction discomfort well with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Once healed, Dr. Wilson can discuss tooth replacement options such as dental implants, dentures, or bridges to restore your smile and bite function.
If you have a tooth causing pain or your dentist has recommended extraction, call 719-846-7387 or request an appointment online. We serve patients from Trinidad, Walsenburg, Raton, and across Southern Colorado.
Frequently Asked Questions About Tooth Extractions
Extraction may be recommended when a tooth is too severely decayed or damaged to be saved with a filling, crown, or root canal. Other reasons include overcrowding, impacted teeth, advanced gum disease, or teeth that pose a risk of infection.
A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that is visible above the gumline and can be removed with standard dental instruments. A surgical extraction is needed when a tooth is broken at the gumline, impacted, or otherwise not easily accessible.
Most patients recover from a simple extraction within two to three days. Surgical extractions may take one to two weeks for full healing. We provide detailed aftercare instructions to help you heal quickly and comfortably.
Depending on your situation, options include dental implants, bridges, or partial dentures. Dr. Wilson will discuss replacement options with you before or after the extraction so you can make an informed decision about restoring your smile.
