Digital X-Rays
High-resolution radiographs that use up to 90% less radiation than traditional film X-rays.Clearer Images, Less Radiation
Digital X-rays are one of the most important diagnostic tools in modern dentistry. They allow Dr. Amy Wilson to see problems hidden beneath the surface of your teeth and gums, including cavities between teeth, bone loss, infections, and impacted teeth. At New Image Advanced Dental in Trinidad, CO, we use digital radiography exclusively, which delivers higher-resolution images with a fraction of the radiation exposure compared to traditional film X-rays.
The images appear instantly on a chairside monitor, so Dr. Wilson can review them with you in real time and explain exactly what she sees. There is no waiting for film to develop, and the digital format makes it easy to zoom in on details, compare images over time, and share records with specialists if needed.
Types of Digital X-Rays We Use
Bitewing X-Rays
Bitewing X-rays capture the upper and lower teeth in one area of your mouth. They are the most common type taken during routine checkups and are excellent for detecting cavities between teeth and monitoring bone levels.
Periapical X-Rays
Periapical X-rays show the entire tooth from crown to root tip, including the surrounding bone. They are used to evaluate infections, abscesses, root fractures, and the results of root canal therapy.
Full-Mouth Series
A full-mouth series combines multiple periapical and bitewing images to provide a comprehensive view of all your teeth and supporting structures. This is typically done for new patients or when a complete assessment is needed.
Digital X-rays are a routine part of your preventive care at our office. If it has been a while since your last visit, call 719-846-7387 or request an appointment online. We serve patients from Trinidad, Walsenburg, Raton, and across Southern Colorado.
Frequently Asked Questions About Digital X-Rays
Digital X-rays use up to 90% less radiation than traditional film X-rays. A full set of digital dental X-rays exposes you to less radiation than you receive from natural background sources in a single day.
For most patients, bitewing X-rays are taken once a year, and a full set every three to five years. Patients with active dental issues may need X-rays more frequently. Dr. Wilson follows the principle of taking only the images that are clinically necessary.
The radiation from digital dental X-rays is extremely low, and we use a lead apron and thyroid collar for additional protection. However, we generally postpone non-urgent X-rays until after delivery unless they are needed for an emergency.
X-rays reveal cavities between teeth, decay under existing fillings, bone loss from gum disease, infections at the tooth root, impacted teeth, cysts, and developmental abnormalities that are invisible during a clinical exam.
